Danko Jones Speaks Out On His Juno Nom
By: ChartAttack.com Staff
A soft-spoken, but visibly pleased Danko Jones was present at the Juno Nominees Press Conference today (February 12). Danko Jones are nominated in the Rock Album Of The Year category for their album, Born A Lion, which was released last summer.
"Its exciting," Danko (the man) told ChartAttack immediately after the noms were announced. "We worked really hard, we did it all on our own coin and to be acknowledged for that is really satisfying."
Danko Jones were nominated for their My Love Is Bold disc at the 2000 Junos, in the Best Alternative Album category (they lost to Julie Doiron And The Wooden Stars). This time theyre among a field of slightly more mainstream bands with Our Lady Peace, The Tea Party, Treble Charger and Wide Mouth Mason making up the rest of the category. Danko says that hes pleased that the band have graduated to the rock category, but fans shouldnt expect the band to mellow their sound for a more populist audience.
"Its cool that were now a rock band," he quips. "The album is a little bit more punk and heavy than [the other nominees] are. But the rock category is more of a status thing rock is synonymous with popular. But that doesnt mean were going to change. The next album is going to be even more heavy."
Bitchin.
Danko expects to finish recording and mixing Born A Lions follow-up by the end of June ("June 27," boasts bass player JC, "thats firm!") and have it in stores by October.
Danko wasnt the only nominee on hand at this mornings press conference. Nominees Sarah Slean and Remy Shand announced the noms for the top eight categories (patting each other on the back accordingly). Rap Recording Of The Year nominees BrassMunk were also in the house, excited about their nomination for their album El Dorado and full of praise for Canadas still-growing hip-hop industry. Also there to personally accept their nominations were members of Treble Charger, Royal City, Ron Sexsmith, Snow, Tom Cochrane and many more.
